Baylor Scott & White Health is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas, with 52 hospitals, hundreds of patient care facilities, and over 49,000 employees. For over a decade, Morrison has provided signs for Baylor Scott & White facilities throughout North and Central Texas. Baylor Scott & White consolidated several of its administrative offices into a new building on the edge of Dallas’ historic Deep Ellum in 2020.

The Dallas office of Corgan designed the project’s signage program. The design theme features stark white surfaces with dark grey text to maintain the contrast required for accessibility. Corner notches with blue and white returns provide a pop of color while evoking Baylor Scott & White’s colorful pinwheel logo.

Since much of the signage contained colors used in Baylor Scott & White’s branding standards, so color accuracy was critical. How a color is perceived varies depending on different mediums and lighting conditions. Before starting final production, we produced color samples across a range of materials used in the project, from prints to paint, to ensure we met Baylor Scott & White’s branding requirements.

Project Challenges

Signage scope was scheduled for the first half of 2020. Drawing submittals were in progress when the Covid-19 pandemic was declared, leading to a company-wide halt while we evaluated the safest way to move forward.

Since construction on the building was nearing substantial completion during the pandemic, we had to determine how to proceed in the safest manner. Project managers and designers worked remotely. The open nature of our shop allowed for our shop team to maintain social distancing and other new safety protocols with minimal disruption. Installation trips were coordinated with the GC to minimize contact with other trades and followed strict safety guidelines.
